Craftsman Cable & Drum Replacement: The Garland Owner’s Guide

Craftsman cable and drum replacement in Garland typically runs $130-$250 installed for a standard 7-foot residential door, and most jobs are completed same-day when you call before noon. The cables wind around the drums at each end of the torsion tube, and when either one frays, snaps, or jumps the drum, the door won’t lift evenly, or at all. What owners usually notice first is a door that cocks hard to one side on the way up, a loud snap from the garage, or a visible strand of wire hanging loose near the top corner.

We’re an independent Garland service company, not affiliated with Craftsman, but we stock Craftsman-compatible cable and drum assemblies on our trucks because it’s one of the most common parts we replace in this city. Marcus Deller, our owner, spent years diagnosing these exact failures across Garland, including the older subdivisions around Firewheel Town Center where worn torsion springs and tired cables are a predictable Tuesday.

Which Craftsman Models This Applies To

Most Craftsman residential doors built since the mid-1990s use a standard torsion spring setup with either a 4-inch or 5-inch cable drum and a 3/32-inch or 1/8-inch galvanized aircraft cable in lengths of 8’6″ or 9’6″, depending on door height. The exact drum profile matters, because Craftsman bought doors from several manufacturers over the years. A drum from Wayne Dalton’s TorqueMaster line has a different shaft profile than the standard solid steel torsion tube you’ll find on the majority of Craftsman doors made by Chamberlain or Clopay.

The way to identify what you have is to look for the model tag on the door edge or the sticker inside the panel, then match the drum outside diameter and the cable length. OEM Craftsman cables and drums are fine parts, but for a door that’s been in service 10-plus years in Garland heat, we often recommend a quality aftermarket equivalent, which is materially identical without the brand markup. We’ll show you the old part and the new one side by side before installing, and we won’t quote a replacement until you’ve seen the failure with your own eyes. That’s Clause 4 of The Haven Standard, and it’s been our rule since 2015.

Signs Your Craftsman Cable and Drum Replacement Is Failing

Signs Your Craftsman Cable and Drum Replacement Is Failing
  • The door hangs crooked or lifts unevenly. One cable has usually stretched, frayed, or slipped its drum groove. Continued use will bend the track or snap the other cable.
  • A visible wire strand is peeling off the cable. This means moisture and friction have done their work. It will snap, not slowly worsen. Plan for it.
  • The cable has jumped off the drum and wrapped around the shaft. This usually follows a spring failure or loose hardware. The door is now running on one cable and will rack the sections if you keep cycling it.
  • You heard a loud pop and the door feels dead or heavy. In Garland’s humidity cycles, older torsion springs snap, and the cable unloads violently. This isn’t a cable-only repair; we’ll inspect the spring, drums, and bearings in the same visit.
  • The drum at the top of the shaft is wobbling or the cable is cutting into it. A worn drum face or loose set screw will chew through a new cable in weeks. Both get replaced together.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For most Craftsman doors in Garland, replacing both cables and both drums as a matched set runs $130-$250 installed, including the parts, the service call, and the labor. The range is driven by the drum size, whether we’re also addressing a broken spring, and the condition of the shaft bearings. You’ll get one flat, written price and a written scope before we touch anything; Clause 1 of The Haven Standard says “call for a quote” is not how this works, and we’ve operated that way since 2015.

The price is agreed before the work starts, and it doesn’t change once we’re on site unless we find something you specifically asked us to leave alone. Every cable and drum swap closes with a documented photo record of what we found, what we replaced, and what the finished install looks like. The work is backed by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not right, we make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

The torsion system on a Craftsman door is under high tension. The drums, cables, and springs are all connected to a loaded shaft, and a cable that lets go while you’re on a ladder can take a finger, an eye, or worse. This is one part we strongly recommend leaving to a trained technician; we’re not saying that to sell labor, we’re saying it because we’ve seen the aftermath.

What you can safely do is photograph the failed part, note your door’s model number if the tag is legible, and check whether the door is still on its track. Then call us at (469) 949-6806. Same-day service is available for cable and drum failures, and the person who answers is a live human, not a recording.
