Craftsman Roller Replacement: The Garland Owner’s Guide

Craftsman roller replacement in Garland typically runs $110-$220 installed, and we stock the compatible steel and nylon rollers on the truck for same-day replacement in most cases. The part itself is inexpensive; what you’re paying for is the labor to safely remove the old rollers from the track, which is where most DIY attempts go sideways. Homeowners usually discover the problem as a grinding sound or a door that jerks on the way up. Sometimes it’s a visual catch: a roller that’s flattened on one side, a wheel that’s split, or metal shavings collecting at the bottom of the vertical track.

Servo Garage Doors Garland is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Craftsman. We work on their doors every week, and we keep the roller sizes their older and newer series use staged on the truck so we’re not running to a supplier mid-job.

Which Craftsman Models This Applies To

Craftsman garage doors shipped under several series lines over the years: the 139 and 241 series (opener-centric), the 580 and 590 series (door-centric), and doors sold through Sears and, more recently, through big-box retailers under the Craftsman name. The roller itself is standardized across most of these: a 2-inch nylon or steel wheel on a 7/16-inch stem, with a 4-inch stem length being the most common. But. Some older Craftsman doors from the 1980s and early 1990s used a 1-3/4-inch roller, and if you swap in a 2-inch wheel without checking, the door binds at the curve of the track. That size mismatch is the single most common compatibility gotcha we see on Garland calls.

You can identify your roller size by looking at the wheel itself: most Craftsman units stamp the size on the nylon wheel’s face or on the metal collar where the stem meets the wheel. No stamp? Measure the wheel diameter across its face. If it’s 1-3/4 inches, you need the older spec. If it’s 2 inches, you’re in the modern standard. For OEM versus aftermarket: Craftsman-labeled rollers exist, but most are manufactured by the same third-party suppliers who make the aftermarket equivalents, often at a markup. We stock quality nylon rollers with sealed bearings, which run quieter and last longer than the steel rollers with unsealed bearings that shipped on many Craftsman doors. We’ll show you both options on the truck and quote the difference before anything gets touched.

Signs Your Craftsman Roller Replacement Is Failing

Signs Your Craftsman Roller Replacement Is Failing
  • The door growls or scrapes when moving. This usually means a roller bearing has gone dry or seized. The wheel stops rolling and drags along the track instead, and you can sometimes see flat spots worn into the nylon where the wheel was skidding.
  • The door shudders or bounces mid-travel. A roller with a broken or sloppy stem wiggles inside the hinge, and the door’s weight shifts unevenly. In midrise and high-lift tracks common in Garland garages with lifted ceilings, this gets worse fast because the angled track puts side pressure on the stem.
  • Metal shavings under the vertical track. Steel rollers shedding material against steel track produce a fine gray dust or small shavings at the bottom of the track. By the time you see this, the wheel is usually deeply grooved and the track may need a wipe-down and inspection too.
  • The door hangs slightly crooked in the opening. A roller that’s jumped the track or broken at the stem lets one corner drop. If you see this, stop using the door. The opener may drag that corner across the jamb and fold the panel, which turns a $110-$220 roller job into a panel replacement at $250-$500.
  • The door works but sounds like a cement mixer. Nylon rollers with sealed bearings fail differently than steel: the bearing gets gritty and the wheel still turns, but the noise is constant and distinct. Replacing all the rollers at once usually eliminates this, and the improvement is immediate.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s the Garland pricing, plain:

Service Price Range What It Includes
Single roller replacement $110-$180 One roller matched to your Craftsman door, install, track inspection
Full set (all rollers, typically 10-12) $160-$220 All rollers replaced, hinge check, lubrication, door balance check

The range depends on how many rollers we’re replacing, whether the hinges are reusable, and whether your door uses steel or nylon wheels. We quote a flat, written price before any work starts, per Clause 1 of The Haven Standard. That price includes the parts, the labor, and a documented photo record of what we found and what we did when we left. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the work: if a roller fails or binds within a year, we make it right.

You’ll also get a written scope listing the exact roller size, the number of rollers replaced, and the brand we installed. No ‘call for a quote.’ The quote is what we bring with us.

You can safely do one thing yourself: look at the rollers and identify what’s failing. Run the door manually (pull the release cord first), and watch each roller as it passes through the curved section of the track. If a wheel is flat, split, or skating instead of rolling, you have your answer. What you should not do is unbolt the hinges and swap rollers yourself. The bottom roller on a garage door is under constant tension from the lift cables, and the top rollers are near the torsion spring assembly. When our techs replace rollers, we release that cable tension before anything gets unbolted. A cable that snaps loose under load can take a hand or a face with it. And if your Craftsman door is a heavier double-wide, the danger is worse because the spring is wound tighter.

If you’ve already diagnosed it and just want the part, that’s fine. We’ll install the roller you need and tell you honestly if we see wear on the other rollers that should be addressed now versus later. Call (469) 949-6806 and we’ll walk through what you’re seeing.
