LiftMaster Cable & Drum Replacement: The Garland Owner’s Guide

LiftMaster cable and drum replacement in Garland typically runs $130-$250 installed, and we carry the common LiftMaster drum and cable sets on the truck for same-day service. Most Garland homeowners discover the failure the same way: the door hangs crooked on one side, or they hear a sharp snap followed by a cable whipping loose inside the track. We photograph the failed cable drum before quoting anything, per Clause 4 of The Haven Standard, so you see exactly what we saw before any work begins.

What you’re dealing with is the lift cable, the twisted steel line that runs from the bottom bracket up to the cable drum, the grooved spool mounted on the torsion shaft. When one fails, the door’s weight shifts to the other side, and continuing to run the opener will chew up tracks, rollers, and sometimes the panel itself. We replace both drums and both cables as a set, because the surviving side has been carrying the same load as the one that let go.

Which LiftMaster Models This Applies To

Any LiftMaster residential door with a torsion spring system uses a cable and drum, and most Garland homes built after 1995 have exactly that. That includes current models like the 8500W and the older 3800/3900 side-mount openers, the chain-drive 8365 and 8550 series, and the belt-drive 8160 and 8587 series. The drum itself is matched to the door’s height and track radius, not to the opener model, which is why we measure rather than guess.

Here’s the gotcha most owners hit: LiftMaster’s own drums are often a 400-8 or 400-12 spec, meaning they carry a 4-inch diameter and are machined for either 8- or 12-inch track radius. However, aftermarket drums and high-lift conversion kits are common on new construction in Firewheel Town Center and the surrounding subdivisions, where builders occasionally spec LiftMaster openers but third-party rear hardware. If someone handed you a used part or a universal drum, that’s likely the mismatch we see on about one in four call-outs. OEM LiftMaster drums run about $15-$35 more per side than a quality aftermarket set, and in Garland’s heat, the aftermarket units have proven fine for standard 7-foot doors. For high-lift or 8-foot doors, we order OEM and show you the part number before we schedule.

Signs Your LiftMaster Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

Signs Your LiftMaster Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing
  • The door hangs crooked or stalls halfway up. One cable has slipped off its drum or frayed to the point of stretching, so one side lifts while the other lags behind and jams the rollers.
  • You hear a snap and the door slams or drops on one corner. The cable broke outright, and the remaining cable and drum are now absorbing double the rated load, a condition that fails fast and is the reason we replace sets, not singles.
  • The cable is tangled or wrapped unevenly around the drum. The drum grooves have worn smooth, so the cable no longer tracks in its channel and instead stacks onto itself like a fishing reel bird’s nest.
  • You can see individual wire strands poking out of the cable. That’s fatigue, not a cosmetic issue. Garland’s hot summers and cold snaps work the steel through enough thermal cycles that eight to ten years is a fair service life here, less if the door is opened four or more times daily.
  • The drum shows a visible crack at the set-screw boss. The set screw that locks the drum to the torsion tube was overtightened at install, which is the most common failure we document in Garland homes built between 2015 and 2025.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Garland, expect $130-$250 installed for a full LiftMaster cable and drum replacement, both sides, including labor. At the low end, that’s a stock 400-8 drum pair with new galvanized 7-foot cables on a standard-height door. The high end covers high-lift geometry, OEM LiftMaster drums, longer cables for 8-foot doors, and any bracket hardware the failed cable damaged on its way out. The written price in your hand before work starts is the final price, that’s Clause 1 of The Haven Standard.

What’s included: both drums, both cables, inspection of the torsion shaft and spring condition, and a documented photo record of the failed components and the completed install. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise applies to this repair like every other. If the work isn’t right, Marcus Deller and our Garland crew make it right, backed by The Haven Standard and a terms page, not a handshake.

You can safely identify the problem without touching anything: a flashlight on the drum, a photo of the cable condition, and a look at whether one side of the door sits higher than the other. What you should not do is unbolt the drum, loosen the set screws, or remove the bottom bracket to thread a new cable yourself. The torsion shaft holds spring tension that does not care how careful you are, and a cable under partial load can let go with enough force to break a hand or worse. This is not a “watch a video and save $200” repair. We carry the parts on the truck because this fix is a call, not a project.

If you’re within Garland city limits or nearby in Sachse, Rowlett, or Richardson, we can usually be there same day.
